Tourist Destination

South Africa – Western Cape - Overberg

Western Cape - OverbergSouth Africa’s coastline gently kisses the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean in the west and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean in the east.

The Overberg area is situated in the Western Cape where cooling breezes from the Atlantic Ocean and the Bot River lagoon are the perfect counter for the Bot River Valley's warm summers.

Our winters are mild and frost-free and contribute to the area's appeal as a year-round tourist destination.

Accommodation

We recommend the following accommodation options to tourists visiting the Overberg area.

Barton Luxury Villas

Set on gentle slopes with a backdrop of Kogelberg Eco Park fynbos, Barton’s villas offer sweeping views of the Kogel valley, the Bablionsberg and Hottentots Holland Mountains. The spacious Tuscan-style luxury mountainside villas are designed to maximise the views over the valley, vineyards, olive groves and fynbos. Located on a working vineyard, the four Tuscan-style self-catering luxury mountainside villas each offer spectacular views across the valley and the Kogelberg Nature Reserve.

Things to do in the area

Things To Do

At the Bot River lagoon and surrounding area, you may spot the wild horses that roam free in the marshlands area. These are believed to be the only herd of wild horses that roam a wetlands habitat in South Africa and are a truly spectacular sight.

  • From June to November Southern Right Whales can be seen from the coastline, where they come to mate and calf.  Nearby Hermanus boasts the title of "Land-Based Whale Watch Capital" of the world and also provide whale watching excursions by boat.
  • For the brave and adventurous, approximately thirty minutes from Hermanus, the traveler will find Gansbaai and Kleinbaai which are well-known for Great White shark cage diving. The Great White Shark Diving Company provides daily excursions to Dyer Island and Shark Alley, one of the largest colonies of Great white sharks in the world.
  • Shellfish lovers can sit and enjoy fresh mussels, oysters and sushi from the Shellfish Bar with its spectacular view of the harbour.  For those interested in the conversation of abalone, the Abalone Farm near Hermanus is a must to visit.
  • The quaint little shops and restaurants at the Kleinmond harbour are guaranteed to provide each visitor with a special gift or memory to take home as well as a choice of mouth-watering dishes.

Of special interest is the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, which was the first UNESCO-declared Biosphere in South Africa and is situated on Rivendell's doorstep.
